Project Description

January 16, 2021 |Marcel Wuethrich | Collecting Ornate rainbow fish (Rhadinocentrus ornatus) at Tin Can Bay (Queensland, Australia)

I am a Research Scientist in the field of microbiology and immunology at the University of Wisconsin. I have been keeping fish and Aquaria since my childhood and have actively bred fish for the last 20+ years. My primary interest and focus is in breeding rainbow fish, blue eyes species and lately high-end plecostomus.
I currently maintain 70+ tanks for breeding and displaying fish ranging from 10 to 180 gallons. For the last 3 years I started breeding fish outside in 65 and 100 gallon tubs taking advantage of the conditions outdoor tubs offer for breeding fish during the summer months.
In July 2019 I had the opportunity to attend and speak at a scientific meeting in Brisbane, Australia. Of course, I took advantage of the opportunity to explore the outdoors after the meeting. Leo O’Reilly, who collects, keeps and breeds the most locations of Ornate Rainbow fish (Rhadinocentrus ornatus (Rhads)), went fishing with me at Tin Can Bay. I will be showing pictures of the habitat and the fish that we collected during this trip. I will also be talking about how I breed the Rhads indoors and outdoors.
Here is a video of the talk.
